Some of these rules exist because of the law and safety. Others exist because Pickle items pass between people and get worn, which creates hygiene and safety obligations a resale-only marketplace does not have. Read the Restricted section carefully if you list fur, exotic skins, or fine jewelry.
Listing something on this page does not mean Pickle will review it before it goes live. You are responsible for what you list.
Not allowed on Pickle
Outside our categories
The following are not listable regardless of condition or value:
Electronics beyond photo and video cameras
Services of any kind, including styling, alterations, cleaning, and personal shopping
Digital goods, gift cards, store credit, Pickle Credits, tickets, and currency
Food, drink, and supplements
Live animals
Real estate
Automobiles, Bicycles, and other modes of transportation
Firearms, knives, and anything else that may qualify as or be used as a weapon
Controlled and/or prescription medications and any illicit substances and narcotics defined by local and international laws.
Counterfeit and misrepresented items
Every item must be authentic. Counterfeits, replicas, dupes, and unbranded items listed under a brand name are prohibited. See the Policy on Counterfeit, Fake, and Dupe Items for the full rules and enforcement ladder.
Hygiene: items that cannot be rented or sold
The following cannot be listed for rent because they cannot be made safe between wearers unless they are new and unused:
Underwear, briefs, thongs, and any garment worn directly against the genitals
Hosiery, tights, socks, and stockings
Any garment with an enclosed or unlined gusset
Bras and bralettes sold as intimates. Structured outerwear pieces such as bustiers and corsets are allowed
Nipple covers, pasties, and adhesive inserts
Earrings and any jewelry worn in a piercing
Wigs, hairpieces, hair extensions, and hair accessories worn against the scalp
Anything with visible bodily fluid, including blood, on it. This is a biohazard and the item must be removed from the platform, not cleaned and relisted
Swimwear is allowed to be rented and sold on Pickle.
Safety and hazardous items
Weapons of any kind, including decorative, costume, replica, and antique
Firearms, ammunition, and any component of either
Blades, including hatpins and hair sticks with a sharpened point
Aerosols, pressurized containers, flammables, and solvents
Loose lithium batteries
Motor vehicles and motorized equipment
Items recalled by the manufacturer or the Consumer Product Safety Commission
Medical devices, including contact lenses, prescription eyewear, and orthotics
Drugs, drug paraphernalia, tobacco, vapes, and alcohol
Human or animal remains, including teeth and bone
Restricted materials that are never allowed
These are prohibited outright:
Elephant ivory and ivory from any species
Sea turtle shell and tortoiseshell
Coral and whalebone
Feathers, skins, or parts from birds protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, including eagle, hawk, and owl
Any part of a species listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act or Appendix I of CITES
If you believe you have a documented antique exemption for one of these, contact Pickle Support before listing rather than listing and waiting to be removed.
Allowed with conditions
Real fur and shearling
New fur can be rented and sold on Pickle, except by and to users in California. California prohibits the sale of new fur products but exempts used fur, so pre-owned fur can be sent to California addresses.
Pre-owned fur is allowed. You must:
State clearly in the listing that the item contains real fur
Name the animal, for example mink, fox, sable, rabbit, shearling
Do not list an item as faux fur if it contains real fur, and do not list real fur as faux to avoid scrutiny. Both are misrepresentation under our not-as-described rules.
Exotic skins
Alligator, crocodile, caiman, python, lizard, iguana, skink, ostrich, and stingray items are allowed with two conditions:
The species must be named in the listing
The item cannot be delivered to a California address
California's restriction on exotic skins does not have an exemption for used or vintage items, unlike its fur law.
Fine jewelry and precious metals
You must describe metal content and stones accurately:
Do not describe an item as gold, silver, or platinum unless it is solid at the stated karat or fineness
Plated, filled, and vermeil items must say so
Lab-grown, simulated, and treated stones must be identified as such
Do not state a carat weight you have not verified
Children's and infant apparel
Children's sleepwear must meet federal flammability requirements, and children's outerwear must not have drawstrings at the neck or hood. Infant sleep products, car seats, carriers, and strollers are not listable at all.
Items with missing labels
If the care label or fiber content label has been removed, say so in the listing and describe the fabric as accurately as you can.
Altered and repaired items
Allowed, and must be disclosed. Alterations, resizing, re-dyeing, replaced hardware, and repairs all go in the listing description. Undisclosed alterations are grounds for a full refund to the renter under My Rental or Purchase is Not as Described.
This list is not exhaustive
Pickle may remove any listing we determine creates legal, safety, or hygiene risk, whether or not it appears above. We update this policy as our categories and the law change. If you are unsure whether something is listable, ask Pickle Support before you list it.
You are also responsible for complying with the law where you are and where the item is going. An item allowed on Pickle is not automatically legal to send everywhere.
Seller responsibility
You are responsible for knowing what you are listing. Not knowing that an item was prohibited, recalled, counterfeit, or restricted does not prevent Pickle from removing the listing, refunding the renter or buyer, reversing your payout, or restricting your account.
Pickle may ask you at any time to provide documentation for a listed item, including proof of authenticity, proof of purchase, or material composition, and may hide or remove the listing while we wait.
Enforcement
Depending on what happened and whether it has happened before, Pickle may:
Remove the listing, which may not be relisted
Cancel or reverse the transaction and refund the renter or buyer
Withhold or reverse your payout
Issue a formal policy warning
Restrict your ability to list in a category
Suspend listing, renting, payouts, or account access
Review and remove your other listings
Permanently close your account
We may close an account permanently after repeated violations. We may also close an account after a single violation involving a prohibited item that carries safety or legal risk, deliberate concealment, or a pattern across multiple listings.
Reporting a listing
If you see a listing that breaks this policy, report it through by emailing [email protected]. Include the listing name, the closet it belongs to, and what you think the issue is. Reports are confidential and we do not tell the lender who reported them.
Submitting reports you know to be false, or using the reporting tool to interfere with a competitor's closet, is itself a policy violation.
