1. Do I Need to Clean the Item Before Returning It?
No. Renters are not expected to clean items before returning them. Owners manage cleaning and care between rentals.
The only exception is if the Owner has clearly stated a cleaning requirement in the item description and provided you with instructions on how to clean it. If dry cleaning is required, the Owner should have priced the rental accordingly and allowed enough time in the rental period for you to get it done.
If you are unsure whether you are expected to clean the item, message the Owner before your return date.
2. When You Must Not Clean the Item
Do not attempt to clean an item when:
You have not spoken to the Owner about it
You are unsure about the fabric or correct cleaning method
The stain or damage seems serious
The item is delicate, embellished, structured, or dry-clean only
The Owner has not given explicit approval
Unapproved cleaning attempts can cause further damage and may increase your liability for repair or replacement costs.
3. What to Do If You Spill or Stain Something
Do not panic
Do not attempt to clean it yet
Message the Owner immediately through in-app chat
Describe what happened and share photos
Also contact Pickle Support so there is a record
Wait for the Owner's instructions before doing anything
The Owner may:
Approve you trying a specific cleaning method
Prefer to handle cleaning themselves
Ask you to return the item as-is and let Pickle facilitate next steps
If the Owner approves you attempting cleaning, follow their instructions exactly.

4. Light Cleaning That May Be Allowed (With Owner Permission)
If the Owner explicitly approves, you may be allowed to:
Gently spot treat using a method they recommend
Remove lint
Lightly air the item out β never near direct heat
Always confirm the fabric type and care instructions before doing anything.
Never, under any circumstances:
Use bleach
Use strong detergents
Machine wash delicate, embellished, or structured items
Machine dry anything
Use stain removers not approved by the Owner
Scrub or stretch the fabric
If you make a stain worse or cause additional damage during an approved cleaning attempt, you may still be responsible for the outcome.
5. Caring for an Item during your Rental
To keep the item in good condition throughout your rental:
Hang it up after wearing to let it air out
Keep it away from smoke, heavy perfume, or strong scents
Avoid applying heavy makeup while wearing the item
Avoid rough surfaces that may snag or pull the fabric
Store the item in a safe, dry place until return
Do not iron unless the Owner specifically confirms it is safe to do so
Minor wrinkles and light scent from wearing are considered normal wear and are not your responsibility.

6. If the Item Arrives Dirty or Not Ready-to-Wear
You are not responsible for cleaning an item that arrives dirty, excessively wrinkled, or not ready to wear. Instead:
Upload photos to your condition report immediately
Contact Pickle Support within 12 hours of delivery
Schedule a same-day return unless the Owner instructs otherwise

7. Should I Dry Clean the Item?
No β never dry clean a rented item unless the Owner has explicitly asked you to. Dry cleaning can shrink, discolor, or structurally damage certain fabrics and embellishments. If you dry clean without approval and damage occurs, you may be held liable.
If the Owner does require dry cleaning, they should have stated this clearly in the item description, provided instructions, and allowed for enough rental time to get it done.
9. End-of-Rental Cleaning Checklist
Before returning the item:
Make sure the item is completely dry β never return damp clothing
Remove all personal items from pockets or bags
Do not spray perfume or fresheners on the item
Do not attempt last-minute cleaning unless the Owner has approved it
Complete your return condition report with clear photos before handing the item over or scheduling a pickup
